 Surviving Research Methodology

The workshop will equip students with the information and skills essential to design and conduct research. The workshop intends to instruct students on research design, strategies, methodologies, and procedures. Important procedures in preparing a research project will also be discussed, including problem identification and formulation of the research question, development of the study objective, review of relevant literature, and research model. In addition, data collecting and analysis methods are presented. The session also covers the necessary preparations for writing a research proposal. The workshop will be conducted in Mandarin and English. The instructors will provide feedback to the students after each session.

About Facilitator

Faizatul Akmar, ABDUL NIFA is currently an Associate Professor in Project Management at the School of Technology Management and Logistics (STML), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). Faizatul received her PhD in Construction & Project Management from the University of Salford, UK. Her industry experience includes working on several building and infrastructure projects as a Project Engineer (2000 – 2002). Throughout her career in UUM, Faizatul has actively contributed to organizing symposiums and conferences at the international level with her colleagues in UUM and other universities. With an academic background in civil engineering, business administration and project management; Faizatul’s main research interest revolves around the application of team integration methods in the construction industry such as Partnering and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), Project Procurement in Post-Disaster Reconstruction, Post-Disaster Community Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction. Faizatul has held several administrative positions at UUM which roles span over student development, international honour society administration and university-industry community relations for UUM. At present, Faizatul is also a Research Fellow in the Disaster Management Institute, and she actively participates in collaborative projects with other universities from Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam in the Asian Cooperative Program Consortium in the areas of Disaster Risk Reduction and Community Resilience since 2017. As a volunteer and trainer with MERCY Malaysia, Faizatul contributes her knowledge by conducting training and educational programs for communities at risk of facing water-related disasters. Faizatul is also a program member of UNESCO-IHP that actively participates in conducting programs to create awareness and encourage youth empowerment in water resources management and water safety such as the Young Water Leader program and the National Water Camp.

Khai Lin, CHONG is currently a Senior Lecturer in Environmental and Disaster Management at the School of Technology Management and Logistics (STML), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). Khai Lin received her Doctoral Degree from Kyoto University in Civil and Earth Resources Engineering. Throughout her career in UUM, Khai Lin has actively contributed to organizing symposiums and conferences at the international level with her colleagues in UUM and other universities. With an academic background in civil and environmental engineering and disaster management; Khai Lin's main research interest revolves around strengthening the science-policy-public interface and delivering scientific knowledge or technical information specifically in water-related disaster. Khai Lin is also the Director of Disaster Management Institute in STML, UUM and she actively participates in collaborative projects with other universities in the Asian Cooperative Program Consortium in the areas of Disaster Risk Reduction and Community Resilience from 2017 to the present. Previously, she has held administrative position in UUM International Office, focusing on international relations and international student development. Furthermore, Khai Lin is also involved with programs that highlight community resilience as the main agenda. Khai Lin actively participates in UNESCO-IHP Program which focuses on promoting water-related program in national and global agenda, such as Women and Water, National Water Camp for students in all level of education and many more. Khai Lin is also a volunteer and trainer for MERCY Malaysia in who is involved in facilitating community based disaster risk management for water-related disaster high risk areas.
